when i was leaving work this afternoon I saw a "man" dragging a young dog on a leash across the pavement of backstreet. I stopped and said that what he was doing was cruel and dangerous to a dog, his response was " a puppy needs to learn when to walk". I tried to explain that the dog was bleeding and being dragged raw to the bone and wouldnt understand the need to walk, he/she only knew that it was tired and needing water. I offered to take the dog from him, but was told "Miss, mind your own business, this dog needs to learn to behave".
What are we to do?, we need to stop this mentality.....how is this right? I cried myself all the way home, and cry right now thinking about it.

what are the options and solutions?

Cheryl96s,
There is a women on STT that owns the Toad & Tart Rest. Tell her what happened and the gates of hell will open on this guy.

Open the GATES OF HELL for the idiot. I just wish I could teach mine to bite stupid people, but that would be another bad can of worms.

Just call the Humane Society or better yet, join & volunteer with them.

i saw a young woman (beast) dragging a puppy once. i stopped and yelled at her. told her that i was going to report her and that i would be checking back and that the police/shelter would be checking on her. she immediately put the dog down. who knows what happened later but for then she stopped and i felt better. WE HAVE TO ACT

take picture with cell phone if you have to....at least that will stop them.

I wish that I had taken a picture and said that I was reporting him, that may have stopped the abuse for the time. If I ever see that sorry ass person again, I promise that I will handle things differently and that person will not go home with the animal.
Trade~ I should volunteer!
This sucks, how in their mind do they think that this is ok?

Just run the animal over, but be sure not to hit the dog.

Hubby had a similar encounter. Woman had a small, young dog following her (can't imagine WHY), and my husband pointed out to her gently and politely that the dog was in danger, crossing the very busy 4 lanes of traffic. She picked up the dog by one leg and tossed it out onto the edge of the road and told my husband to take it if he wanted it. He did. Took him to the shelter, where he got adopted.

Of all the positives and all the negatives that we have discussed on numerous threads, this is the one things that I do mention to my husband that I would like to get away from. Of course, my leaving wouldn't help any of the animals here, and I know it goes on everywhere, but holy cow folks, what do we do? What do we do when it's forgiven to treat animals inhumanely because it's cultural? Education for the next generation, but I don't see it happening, sorry to say. I know the STXAWC has an education program, but it will take a while to change an embedded attitude.

Edited to add:
This is one of those times when I don't have a problem with transplants (myself included) trying to change the "culture".

The STT humane society also has an education program. It IS better from the way it was when I first got here but unfortunately, it won't happen overnight. All the shelters do what they can with limited resources but it's an uphill battle.

know of someone who is always complaining about seeing animals abused. i told him to start taking pictures. and tell the abuser you are turning the pic in or going to print it out and post it on web sites and signs.

Before I install a satellite system I always conduct a site survey. Occasionally I encounter a situation where the poor dog is miserable. Tied to a "hot box" in the corner of the yard. No shade, no water, very short twisted up chain...................Pisses me off!! I ask the owner, "This your dog?" Yes "Why doesn't it have any water?", "It needs a longer chain", " You should locate his dog house under that shade tree" etc.....
If they cop an attitude I tell them to find someone else. I'm not interested in doing business with you, and shame on you! I know it's not much but at least as I drive away they have to think about it for a minute.

I think people that do this should be tied out in the sun with no water for a few days, or weeks. They have no shame. The other day it was a 70lb pit mix with a chain no longer than 3 ft. Poor guy could barely turn around.
I don't think these creeps even name their dogs. A couple of times I've asked and they just shrugged. Arg!!!
Totally disgusting!!!

I try to toss these dogs a treat as I leave. The other day it wasa filthy Rottie and a piece of beef jerkey. Tail was wagging. LOL Some watch dog.

Those people(I`m not allowed to describe, as we have in fact got to the point it`s disallowed....here).
Should not be allowed to have a pet!
And shame on you all that we can`t call them out(here)!
But I can & do in the real world(my wife thinks I may get shot one day for defending animals & speaking my mind)

I`m glad that I`m allowed to go through life here & tell it like it is, too bad in here, we cannot.
I spit on those who I can that would treat a innocent animal like the one explained above.
Too bad in here(this forum) you can`t spit on those who won`t take it in the real world(shame on you!).

I guarantee you, that person dragging that dog, if after asking him to stop continued around me, I`d grab the leash & shout how would you like it if I dragged you!
Anyone who knows me knows I would.

Wrong is wrong, & we know the "culture" that allows this to persist.
And as described above, these animals wag their tails after they have been abused.
There is nary a human who could show that type of unconditional love after being abused.
To continue to trust & hope for some thread of companionship...
This is too sad for me to go on about!
