ANGRY? SO REGISTER TO VOTE!

There are several rather angry posts on this forum from time to time from a few people who are leaving because of injustices done to them, either real or perceived. I don't have a problem with anyone venting their spleen. I really do understand how diffcicult it can sometimes be to live here.

I never had so much as a traffic violation before I moved here 20 years ago but, since then, I've been arrested twice, have been jailed twice and have otherwise endured an incredible amount of abuse (both physical and verbal) from police officers.

Am I a drug user, a drug dealer, a convicted felon? No, of course not.

I guess my point is, without boring any of you further, is that when you live here you can register to vote. And then you carefully listen to the various candidates and then you cast your vote at the polls.

If you really want to be a part of this community, on whichever island you settle, and you plan to stay and make these islands your home, then register to vote!

Way too many people over the years have told me that, "I'm not registered to vote because my vote won't make no darned difference."

I disagree. It certainly does.

So, newbies, get off your duffs and not only read the St.Thomas Daily News every day but also The Avis and then go online to St Thomas Source.

Be a part of this community in a posiive way!

Well said! This is the most sound piece of advice I've seen yet. Not only should it apply to those down there, but to everyone, in every town and every city of every state in this country. The right to vote is one of the most powerful tools we have as citizens to "change" things, yet so many people don't even bother. Instead, they use excuses like the one above, but continue to piss and moan about the way the country is run or about some law that got passed. Don't like something? Write a letter. Don't know who represents you? Try this http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/ . Of course, a lot of things boil down to the local level, so start there. Every elected official has a main priority... to keep his or her job, and the way to do that is to make the constituents happy. If they feel like there's a lot of unhappy folks stirring up trouble, sometimes things start to happen.

Exercise your rights. It feels good.
