Anecdotal Examples That Life in the USVI is Not Like Life on the Mainland US
This morning, there was an unattended, small herd of cattle (two bulls and eight cows), milling about the parking lot of the STX DMV. The DMV is split between a police station and a large wooden shack with an open air, covered waiting area furnished with long wooden benches, a wall-mounted rotating fan, and a TV tuned to CNN; five service windows; and one open air carport in which vehicles are inspected.
When we went to the DMV to register our car last year, we were held up for several minutes on the service road that leads from the main road to the DMV while a man walked a decent-sized herd of sheep between two houses and across the street toward UVI.
It's this sort of stuff that you can read/hear about again and again, but as *Gasp* pointed out in her terrific post about moving back to the states, most people won't really understand just how different it is down here until they experience it first-hand.

This is why we're moving to STX next year. I would much rather come across a herd of cattle, sheep or whatever than coming across 2 or more vehicles that have collided on our busy roads especially to find out half of a vacationing family perished or mom on her way to taking her children to school. I am on "island time" already. My catch phrase is "That"s why I'm moving to the islands". We are definitely ready to join those islanders with an appreciation for a laid back life. I've been living in Florida for 23 years from Wisconsin, so I our catch phrase has been "Is this great or what?" But God made a lot of wonderful places on this earth and I believe he means for me to live on STX. I regularly read this board-for the past year and a half. Great stuff. Thanks to all who give facts, impressions, advise and opinions.
Hello All,
I too, feel as Judi does on the move to STX. I grew up in Baltimore Md. Moved to one of the prettiest places in mainland U.S. (Santa Barbara, Calif.) for 28 years. I'm fortunate to be able to retire in my late 50's and looking for a place to be on Island time permanently. Reading GASP's post was a very positive reenforcement to my decision making. This message board has been a wealth of information, to (Hipcrip, Islander, Marty on STT, Island Paul, Loyal Reader, STT resident, East Ender, and all the other faceless names) on this message board, I thank you. Looking forward to my PMV May28.
