am I high or does this idea have some merit?
I've just noticed that I can get a cheap cruise from Fort Lauderdale to St. Thomas for less than what plane fare would be.... Of course the cruise is round trip and I would be jumping ship... Anybod know of ships that actualy do one way travel?
Hey Joshv2,
We have taken several cruises and one of the last ones we did get off the ship in STT - butt - you have to have the captain's permission. We had to write a letter to the cruiseline giving our cabin numbers, names, passport numbers, and the reason for leaving the ship early, and request permission to disembark. After that was granted we were given a meeting place (outside the ships medic center) a time (9:00 am) and we were escorted off the ship to the US Immigration and Passport office along with all our luggage (you have to carry it yourself, no porter service) and from then on you are not allowed back onto the ship at all. Easy really - don't know how it would work though if STT was your first stop. Good luck trying - let us know.
If St. thomas was the first stop, I don't think there would be a need for customas and immigration. You do need to tell them about your departure though. I picked a couple moving here off a ship and they left with some luggage first and went back for more and were stopped. They were turned over to the ship's agent who assisted them to go to customs and immigration and get it done. They had come from a foeign port though. It can be done.

It's definately got merit....but, you WERE probably hoping you were high, huh? LOL.... 🙂
My mom can't fly, and that is probably how she is going to get there to spend a couple of months with me. I guess we will have to figure out later how to get her butt back!

I live in Florida there are cheap fast ferries that go to the Bahamas only. Found nothing that would go past the Bahamas (except for the big cruise lines) I have used travelocity for 6 years for my airfare and have gone on so many cheap flights. Just to name a few, WI-Vegas $102.00, WI-San Francisco $175.00, WI-Charlston,SC. $94.00, FL-STX $250.00 all round trip. I save over 50% on airfare. I suggest using travelocity, expedia, orbitz etc. In my experience travelocity I found the cheapest. Be patient and keep checking back as prices change almost every hour. The key to searching cheapest flights is to not put in the dates and pick the cheapest airline then choose the dates. It also helps if you can fly out of a smaller, not so major airport. It is cheaper for me to fly out of Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) then West Palm (PBI).
