Am I Forgeting Something?!?

My girlfriend and I are moving to Stt in 4 weeks.
I have booked the plane tickets and lined up a short term place to stay. We are slowly but surely getting our stateside affairs taken care of, and have saved enough money to last a few months after we arrive. Through this message board, I understand that we should wait till we arrive to find an apartment and jobs. But I can't help feeling that we are missing something. Any adivse other things that can be lined up right now, or things that need to be taken care of? Or do we really just sit back and wait for the moving day??

movingguy,

If you haven't done this already as part of getting your affairs together, I recommend that you get a mailing address down here and turn in a forwarding order at your current post office at least two weeks before your move date (and the day you want the forwarding order to take effect). Recent posts on this subject have indicated that it can be hard to get a PO box from the STT post office, so many people use private mail services instead. If you do a search of the board on those topics, you should be able to find out the names and contact info for those services on STT, and maybe even get an idea of the cost.

On STX, I used Mailboxes Etc. Our box cost us $140 for 15 months rental (I prepaid for a year and got 3 months more for free), and I was able to get it set up a month before we moved. That way, I was able to let everyone know my new mailing address before we took off, which really helped speed up delivery time as very little of our mail had to go to the old post office before getting forwaded down here. With mail service to the islands as slow as it is sometimes, you'll want to do everything possible to help speed it along.

Thanks for the fast reply!
Having read a previous post on the mail system, I considered setting up a box -- but since I am not sure what part of the island we will be living on, or wether or not we will have a car, I didn't know how easy it would be to get to our box. Since I handle most of my affairs online, and hardly ever get anything of real importance in the mail, I decided to have our mail forwarded to my parents house, then have them send it to us after we figure out the most convient place to have it sent. Does that sound like a good idea?
I have one more plan to run by you if you don't mind --
I was planning on keeping my stateside bank account open and using it for reoccuring bills, credit cards, cell phone bills ect. And opening an account there for local bills, like rent and day to day expenses -- Can you forsee any problems with this plan??
Thank you so much for all you help..

I don't see any problem with the plan for dual accounts at all. We kept a number of mainland-based investment accounts, a credit union account, and an online bank account open in add9ition to opening a combined checking/savings account down here. I was used to paying everything online except our cleaning company before moving down here it's been a real adjustment to go back to writing checks for so many more bills.

I think you've got a great plantogether for dealing with your snail mail that makes perfect sense given your circumstances. Your parents can always forward mail to you care of general delivery at the post office nearest your temporary lodging, too.

Sounds like you're very together to me, and are doing a great job of keeping up steady progress on getting things finalized up there. The four weeks will go a lot faster than you think, so you might not be able to just sit back and wait to board your flight. I have no doubt that you'll go through them smiling and near giddy at times knowing that you're almost there, even if these last few days turn out to be fast moving, hectic, and filled by an unexpected glitch or two. The journey is half of the fun -- enjoy it all and especially each other, and it's all good, mon. *grin*
