Hey S.

It sounds like the US armed forces Southern Command said that there are no US naval ships in our area, not that they don't know the identity of that ship. I suspect some countries have reciprocal agreements not to share information about the locations of allied ships except on a need to know basis, so if the ship in question is foreign military, it is more likely friend than foe.

Makes sense.....thanks! I was finding it a little hard to believe that no one "knew" what was so close.....still, I want to SEE it! Can you see a flag through your telescope?

No, I can't see any details like that. And yes, I am getting a little *obsessed* with this topic. I just want to know what type of ship it is and what it's doing out there! I mean, we can see it out there so it's not like some covert thing...

Is it a research ship? If so, what is being researched? How long will it be there? Is it an oil drilling/seeking ship? A military ship doing exercises? Inquiring minds want to know 😉

It doesn't seem likely that it would be a military ship if it is sitting in the same place day after day. Much more likely to be a research or salvage vessel, even as large as it is. At least that would explain why it would be staying in one spot this long.

I have it on good authority that some STX divers made a big find a couple of months ago. Of course they didn't say where. Maybe this is their salvage vessel.

Anyone checked out NOAA? Could be one of their ships.

At this point I'm resigned to personally feeling that I don't give a rat's behind what it is unless it has glowing lights on all sides, levitates from time to time and will eventually take up into the stratosphere corrupt politicians and corrupt major business owners worldwide! And, Jules, this has NOTHING to do with your initial post and the subsequent thread! Cheers!

It definitely has glowing lights on all sides. It may even levitate from time to time but it's too far away for me to tell. Personally, I'd prefer corrupt politicians end up below the sea floor rather than in the stratosphere.

Oh come on, dntw8up, if they get beamed up to somewhere else way out there, that could be infinitely more bad than going way under. OK, enough said. Jules, let us know what you eventually hear!

Yes, it is a tanker of some sort. Why is it just sitting there?

Time for a new hobby. The ship left yesterday. Guess oil prices went up and it decided to deliver its load 🙂

see, dntw8up, it really IS an alien whatsit, so WOW! Unless either Jules has been sipping too many rums on her porch or dntw8up has been doing likewise... I kid you both. Still would be interesting to know what it is/ was since it's appearance certainly created a diversion for resident posters and lurkers ... Happy Easter and cheers!

It's ba-ack... or never left. It just drifted out of sight for a day. The newpaper has kept in touch with me and is still working on what it is and why it's there. Many people have called them. Clearly it's a tanker. Why it's been sitting there for over a week is anyone's guess. The newspaper folks say that sometimes ships sit and wait while a port is repaired, wait out bad weather, etc, but that they've never known one to sit where this one is sitting, let alone sit there for over a week.

Theories anyone? Shall we start a pool?
-ran out of gas
-mechanical problems awaiting repair
-waiting for the price of oil to go higher before delivering its load

I just hope it's not leaking oil or something.

Here's a better picture (better in a very relative sense-- that sucker's WAY far out)

OK, time for me to join a 12-step group to recover from this little obsession. But, something interesting may be happening right now.

There is a cruise ship headed towards the tanker. Cruise ships usually don't sail that far out. The cruise ship is also on the water's horizon and it looks like it will be at the same point as the tanker in about 15 minutes.

Perhaps the cruise ship diverted out to pick up the stranded tanker crew.

Guess I'll let you know in an hour or so.

Make that 30 seconds to arrival... the cruise ship has indeed met up with the tanker.
