Hello:

I was wondering if anyone has done any MAJOR research on Air Fares/Flights and cheapest time to Travel?

I was wondering if it cheaper on one day of the week verses another?
What about the time of year?

I am planning on a move to the isands in a little while but would like to come down for a week vacation in late september of this year to scope a few things out.

Thanks in advance
Keith

I have been looking at flights recently - mainly to Florida - but in doing so have not found any pattern or trend that I could definately say such and such a month or day was less expensive. I have begun to get the idea that it may be cheaper by a little to fly on a weekend? Hmmm. Maybe because business travelers fly during the week?

The other tip I would offer as noted in another post - is to fly through San Juan. In other words book a ticket from where you are to San Juan and another ticket between San Juan (SJU) and St.Thomas (STT) or St.Croix (STX), depending on which one of us you are planning to fly into.

Also - check out Net Saver fares on AA.com and sign up - free to do so - and they will alert you to special fares between your city and your destination. I've seen these twice now and they are about $150 off the fare I've generally found.

However, the least expensive is still by doing the - through SJU route I mentioned above.

Also advise checking on a regular basis - multiple booking services like: Travelocity, Cheaptickets.com, Orbitz and a whole host of others depending on which one you prefer.

If you are booking a vacation and are looking to stay in a hotel, check out the packages from Expedia. For four people, we paid $2,246, which includes four airfares from Boston (one stop) and hotel in the first week of December. Sometimes, you have to just keep checking these packages on a daily basis. This same package was about $3,200 the week before I booked it. When I saw how much it had gone down (to $2,246) I grabbed it in a hurry. Now, that same trip is back up to $3,200. It seems that most of the packages before mid-December are pretty reasonable.

My friend who travels a lot insists that it is cheaper to book a flight on a weekday then a weekend. I am not talking about a travel date but the day of the week you book a flight. I haven't tested it out, but it's worth a try.Keith Fowee wrote:

Packages are the way to go if you can find them.

We have frineds coming to STX in December. It was cheaper for them to book a package with two nights at the Bucaneer than buying an airline ticket only. The rest of their stay will be on our guest room.

Hope we can match the service and ambience of the Bucanner.

Jim
