I have heard all of the pros ( not many ) and cons (alot ) of having a scooter on the island, but financially i think its going to have to be that way for a while..so heres the question. is there a dealer on st. thomas whos sells some of the newer models of scooters? such as the pmx 50 or pgo pms-110? these look like smaller dirt bikes and have a top speed of about 50 mph. Also, is there a place you could rent one to see how bad it really is ? ha ha, i dont want to give up on this!!! I'll most likely just use it to go to work and back around the movie theater area and some residental housing area close by. are all the roads as treacherous even around these places? from what ive seen the more downtown district like charlotte amalie looks like a scooter would be a fun time, of course not a good idea for island exploration, unless maybe you had time to pick roads that you could navigate...?? And another thing..( I promise that one day i'll only post a one sentence topic someday! ) How hard is to get financing for a car there? We are coming soon and cant wait to escape the 50 below winter temperatures of fairbanks alaska!! Anyone need a guitar player/ singer for a rock band down there??? As usual, thanks to all replys! you are all more than helpful, your inspiring!
Thanks, Tony and Sue

I am sorry but using a scooter is ridiculous on STT. Just save your money and walk and take safari cabs. It is just NOT practical. Financing could be tough because the banks want you to be here for a year or two and get a job history before they loan you money. You might have more luck lending money from online.

There is a scooter rental locale...I think it is somewhere in Havensight. Occasionally I see tourists (ususally in twos) cruising around on their scooters...have even seen some at Drake's Point, which means that the scooters had enough power to get up the mountain. But I have to agree with Chris and Jet...NOT A GOOD IDEA for permament transport. You'd be better off with a motorcycle, although the occasional rain can cause a problem with slick hills.

Not a good idea in my opinion either, but you can rent one first. The place is right next to Modern Music, across from the Gourmet Gallery entrance to Havensight.

O.K., so scooter is out, 4 wheel drive is in. can anyone suggest a good reputable car dealership? Wen we arrive It will actually be a tranfer, not a new job...so, i will have been with the company for 2 years. Do you think they will still consider me not credit worthy?? Anyone got a car to sell around the begining of oct.?? Thanks all !!, Tony and Sue

After a horrible transaction with another dealership, we finally bought a car with Caribbean Auto Mart. Ask for Dwight Gardner. You should talk to him about the qualifying thing. When we first moved down here he did say that lenders would want at least a six-month residency. However, since it seems so discretionary, if you have some paperwork indicating that you are transferring with your company perhaps they will cut you a break?

BTW, my hubby (moto fan) was looking over my shoulder and suggested that you should get an "off-road motorbike so that you can use a lower gear to get yoruself down the mountains." Ok, run with that. 🙂

A related question... am I right in assuming that if you need to lease or finance a car you'll have to buy it on island? I say this because I believe the shipping companies ask you to present the title, proof that there is no lien on the car. Otherwise that would be quite a chore for the repo folks to track you down!
