Advice on moving to USVI
My husband and I are in the very beginning stages of planning a move to the USVI. We currently live in Asheville, NC. We are thinking about a 1 year move but we are not opposed to a permanent move if it seems right for us. We have narrowed down to St. Croix.
There is so much to consider I'm feeling a little overwhelmed.
Does anyone have any advice for the stage that I'm in?
Perhaps you might also have advice about planning a trip to look for apartments, jobs, etc.
Thank you so much for your help!
Liz
Read all you can on this message board. Most of the people here are really terrific. There is a lot of good advice here. Also buy and memorize the "Settlers Handbook". After you have done that, then ask all the questions you can think of. Welcome.
Hi Liz,
It sounds as if you are in the same situation my wife and I are in. We are planning a move to the USVI in about 12 to 18 months, depending on how quickly we can sell our company here in the states.
A pre move visit is absolutely necessary. During the visit, try to keep the mind set that you aren't a tourist, but are investigating your next possible place to live. Cook more than eating out. Visit the grocery stores, K-Mart, etc. These are the places that you will be shopping while you are living there. Drive the island. It will give you an idea about where you may want to live.
Also a couple of books to read would be the Settler's Handbook U.S.Virgin Islands and Life in the Left Lane by Emy Thomas. Both are available at VI Traders. Those on the islands who are familiar with either/both books could probably give you a better insight as to their relevance about life in the USVI now.
Also monitor the various topics here on this forum. The posters can paint a pretty good picture about what life is like in the USVI, both good and bad.
Good luck with it!
Tim
