I know that this a topic that has been discussed in the past, yet it is new for me so please bare with me. Like many others, I am looking at the possibility of moving to St. Thomas in the near future. I have read past postings regarding apartment rentals, cost of living and shipping of cars. I would like to know if it is necessary to have a car while on the island? It is my understanding that there is public transportation. Is it safe to use. My second question is in regards to pets. Are there any problems bringing pets to the island from the US and will there problems bringing them back into the states? Any comments and insights would be appreciated.

You should have no problem bringing your pets in. Some airlines will not accept dogs that go in the baggage compartment in the summer months. You will need some papers from your vet. Check with the airline. No problem going out either. The problem is finding a place to rent that accepts pets.
Cars are generally needed. There is public transportation that is lacking. Some taxi's do something called a 'dollar ride' which travels along the same routes as the busses and picks up people waiting for the bus.
Apartments are available. You should stay at a guest house at first(like mine crystalpalaceusvi.com), for a week or so, to feel your way around. Depending on where you job is may influence where you want to rent. Bringing in a car means shipping, about 1000 dollars, plus road tax @ 11 cents a pound and maybe even some customs duties if your car is foreign(includes Canada).
Hope I have answered some of your questions.

Hi Ronnie,
Thanks so much for the reply. I appreciate knowing that my cat can come with me! I tried contacting Crystal Palace like you suggested and I could not get through. Are sure that that is the correct address? Do you own this place or are you renting there?
Thanks again for the contact.

I own it. Funny, I had some problems, keep trying. You can also get thru St-Thomas.com. Make sure you put the hyphen not a period between St and Thomas. Lot more info there. Between VINow and those guys, you should know everything you need to know before you come.

I found two apartments for rent on the North Side. Actually on St. Peter's Mountain Road overlooking Magen's Bay. Upstairs there is a 2 bedroom 2 bath for $1200 completely furnished, complete with Cable and Telephone and a studio below fo $600. Semi furnished. Email me if you are interested and I will give you the landlord's number.

Ronnie, I would love the info on the North side apts. I am arriving mid to late May. What is the address of your place? Do you have monthly rates or just per night/weekly?

Yes I sometimes rent by the week to recent arrivals until they find a place to move to. I also try to keep abreast of all that is available in the area.

Hi Ronnie,

Good Afternoon!

I lived in St. Thomas back in 1989, I didn't stay too long...had to get back to the states for awhile. Moving back this summer. Was wondering about rental housing and
the crime. Back in 89' it was pretty bad. Long time residents were very concerned. I just remember how daggone
beautiful it was and how great the people were that I personally met. How have things changed? Have you lived there long? What are my chances on renting something weekly
or monthly at a guesthouse while I look around? I'll be moving in October 2001.

Thanks for your time, enjoy your week!

Randy

My wife and I are moving to St. Thomas in mid-May,2001.She is a licensed hairstylist and I am a restaurant manager. We will be looking for employment immediately,as well as affordable housing. We both have stable careers here, but have wanted to move and try island life for about a year now.(since our visit on a cruise last year.)We have saved to afford the initial move and some living expense, but would like some advice on what to do to streamline the employment and housing process. Can you reccomend a weekly rental firm that is affordable until we can find jobs and housing? Also can you reccomend where maybe some of the better "Tipped Position" jobs can be found.I would greatly appreciate any advice or pointers you could offer.I look forward to hearing from you ,shaun.
