advice for STX smart phone - Verizon?

I searched the forums already to get some preliminary advice on good mobile phone service, yet I know mobile phone coverage can change quickly and can also be very location specific.

I am returning to STX, mostly far West End (near Beachside Cafe and south of F'sted).

For a few years I have done well enough on STX with my AT&T gophone. Now I am getting my first smart phone (before returning to STX). Consumer Report Jan 2011 really trashed AT&T VERY BADLY in almost every category, and had high praise for Verizon. I love mac so I am leaning toward an iphone, which gives Verizon as a provider choice recently in addition to AT&T.

Verizon assured my husband a year ago that his cellphone would work in STX. A diseaster. But maybe Verizon has been working toward real coverage in STX? I am hoping ... but older forum news that I read doesn't support that hope.

We both use our cellphone and soon-to-have smart phone for our businesses, so decent coverage will matter. I am already prepared for long-ish outages, slim local support, and dead zones in reception. I also plan to get assurances, if possible, that Verizon would not be charging high roaming charges, if I move toward Verizon iphone as my choice.

Any comment would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Verizon may work here, but the only services we have are AT&T, Sprint, Choice and Innovative...I think that covers it. I have had AT&T for over a decade here and I have no complaints...dunno what Consumer's is talking about...as far as I'm concerned AT&T is the best here...anyone have any other input?

We have 2 iPhones (a 3GS and a 4) and they work really well most of the time except at Cane Bay. Just make SURE you get an OtterBox or similar protective case. I wouldn't have anything here except an AT&T iPhone. I'm sure others have different preferences (my son loves his Droid) but I'm happy.

Verizon charges HUGE roaming fees here. A recent guest was told it would be "no problem" while he was here and got hit with an enormous bill when he got home.
I have had Sprint and left them years ago over coverage and service issues. I have had AT&T for over 6 years with no problems. I know that I get signal at Turtles in F'sted but not sure about any further south.

An ATT nations plan has served me very well here for many many years. ATT service is what it is, but they own and maintain their equipment here. If you use verizon, you will still be piggybacking on someone else's gear, most likely ATT, and you'll pay dearly for that unless you have a free roaming plan.

AT&T works well south of frederiksted--the signal goes as far down as Sandy Point so you shouldn't have a problem. Check at&ts coverage map...it is pretty accurate.

I have had an at&t iPhone for two years and live west. For the most part the service is really good. Last summer the service was less reliable because of all the storms, but I think they improved their service somehow since my phone is currently working a lot better than it ever has.

Edited to add: I would absolutely not use verizon down here. They do not just charge regular roaming fees--the roaming fees are actually international roaming rates. So even if you got a plan with free domestic roaming (as most plans have now anyway), you'd still recharged international rates. Which are really expensive and add up fast.

Thanks so much to you all. You saved me from my own wishful thinking, and a big mistake. AT&T it is.

Wise choice!
My friend who was recently visiting here has Verizon.
For $2.99 per minute you too can rack up the phone bill !!!

Actually Verizon is CDMA, and AT&T is GSM. So Verizon on STX would be piggybacking on Sprint.
