actual moving costs?

I've noticed a few people had their moving expenses paid for by their employers. This is my case too. Our allowance is $8000 and that includes car, household goods and 2 plane tickets. Can anyone help us figure out how far the 8k will really go? I found some cheap (~$400) tickets for the day we need to travel, and if we're going to go over budget anyway I feel like I should buy the plane tickets asap.

We only have a 2 bedroom apartment right now, so we don't have oodles of stuff, but I really have NO idea how much our household goods will cost to move. Any input would be really appreciated!!!

p.s. what's the difference between this board and the message board on vinow.com? they look the same but they have different messages!

Your car alone is going to cost over $2,000 for shipping (from Florida) and taxes. Much more if it is an expensive foreign car.

Freight from Miami will cost approximately $2.40 per cubic foot for shipping of less than container loads. Again you are going to have to pay taxes (4% of the value over $1000 for the entire shipment). Duties will be applied for non US manufactured goods.

Search the message board and you will find lots of additional information.

Thanks Jim. I was hoping to find out what most people ended up paying as the $2.40/cubic foot doesn't mean a lot to me. I couldn't find any useful threads when I searched. Anyone else have any info?

This board is used mainly by people who are moving to the USVI or already live there. The other board is for vacationers and general Q&A. 🙂

My move cost me about $9000. That included having movers pack everything and load it on a 40 foot container, along with my truck. Once I got down here it cost me about another $1200 for taxes and customs on the truck.

If you let me know the make, model and year of your car I can tell you what the customs duty will be, since I'm a contractor for them.

Suddath handled everything in the states, and Fleming took care of everything on this end.

Blaze -

May I ask what area you of the States you moved from? I am virtually in a black hole in west central Arkansas. We will be using Lee Fleming but are trying to figure out when to ship - my husband will arrive on island June 13 but we still have to sell the house and pack. Gotta figure out what we're taking too (this weekend's big job). We have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee (American made). The price I heard from someone else who moved from Arkansas was quite a bit more than yours, and he loaded the container himself. We have a generous moving allowance, but of course don't want to go into the red at any point!

Thanks in advance!

I found shipping with tropical ALOT cheaper than I imagined it would be. Between my buddy and I, we had 2 30 gal Plastic Totes, 2 Big Boxes about the same size and a third box a little smaller. Cost us $80 total to ship to STT for all 5 boxes. We guessed total value upwards of $4000 of all the goods. We haven't got them to the island yet (supposed to be here Sat), so we'll see what they get us with there.

Thanks.

Hi Kevin,
Our 2004 Jeep Liberty is sailing as we speak - ok - type 🙂
We used Lee at Managed Freight (fabulous) so we wouldn't have to deal with registering it in STT as he takes care of it all. Our cost was -

West Palm Beach to STT $1045.00

Personal Use Tax (value of vehicle x 4%) $780.00

Road Tax (weight of vehicle x .16) $528.00

Managed Freight processing fee $330.00

DMV licensing and registration fee $110.00

GR Tax $69.00

Total cost $1797

We drove to West Palm ourselves and delivered it to Tropical Shipping.

Hope this helps
