My favorite wine is made in Northeast Ohio in Amish country, but they won't ship to the VI. 🙁 Most of their wines are very sweet (similar to a Reisling), and the sweetness is what I love about them. Does anyone have a favorite wine they buy here that's really sweet? I drink the Arbor Mist varieties from time to time, but I'm looking for a "real" wine with a little more kick.

Thanks!,
Lisa

I don't know wine (don't drink) but you can ship most anything here through VI Cargo (www.vicargo.com)

muscat is a very sweet wine - often used as a dessert wine.
I know we have or had a few bottles of Barefoot muscat at Good Spirits.

I'm looking for a cheap Sav Blanc myself now that GBH sold out of Locomotion 🙂

Bordeaux and Chardonnay have a interesting bouquet , but the Napa Valley vino taste a bit fruitier(perhaps due to the warmer climate).
Actually, I prefer the more American Domestics, such as Night Train Express, or Mad Dog 2020!
OK, I don`t drink wine!

"How Cheap?" - I prefer the term inexpensive 🙂

Back on the mainland I was used to consuming $5-7 bottles of Cab blends, Pino's, Sav Blanc's. These were grocery store specials for sure and you had to pick of several Ausi brands for best deals. My top choices to splurge on were the Nobillo Sav Blanc from N.Z. which could be around $10 on sale and for the same price the Red Zin from Ravenswood.

I knew on-island everything would be more expensive for the obvious reasons. I can find the Ravenswood at Food Town, but now at $15 a bottle it's only for very special occasions. I'm not cheap - just very budget conscious. I usually try the on-sale vino's in search of gems. Most of the South American stuff is reasonable. It's a fun hobby 🙂

This is an interesting question, will wine clear customs if you ship it here (aka is it legal)? VI Cargo may get it here but Custom's may take it...

Cost-U-Less has Montes for $6.99. Can't beat that price. I don't remember if I have even tried it, but I think I have in a restaurant as the bar wine, or something. Seems it was OK.

I'll let you know tomorrow.:D

Just tried a 2008 La Gatta Moscato D'Asti that my friend brought me, and I love it! Not much alcohol content compared to what I'm used to (only 5%), but it's very yummy and sweet. 🙂

Be careful how the store cares for the wine. I have seen wine boxes set by a window where the sun cooks the wine.White wines are usually meant to be drunk young, but the "shelf life" will be cut in half if it gets too warm.No one likes skunky wine.

How about the Red Truck Cabernet. It is organic, fruity and inexpensive. Like $8 at Premier Wine and Spirits.

Thanks, everybody! (And good one poorthang! :)) Does Premier Wine & Spirits on STX sell to the public? I thought I might go in and browse and ask questions.

Yes, but only in cases. They do not have "isles" to browse. You go in an tell the lady at the desk what wines you want and sometimes they will give you a list to look at.

Premier will sell single bottles. Yes it does take some time but the case discounts add up quickly. Once you develop a relationship it gets easier.

The $6.99 Montes Savignon Blanc was tasty. A little new, as in a bit of sparkle, but totally drinkable.

OK, since I'm still learning my way around, where would I go on STX to shop for single bottles of wine in the $15-$25 range? A friend of mine has a birthday coming up, and I'm the wine person for dinner.

Also, other people have mentioned the Montes--their Rose of Syrah was rated by Bon Appetit magazine as one of the top 5 summer wines. So it can't be too bad.

I FOUND MY NEW FAVORITE (almost) WINE!!! Thank you IslandHops and CAtoSTX... the Barefoot Moscato is delicious!!! It doesn't have quite the kick of the Ohio wine that I love the most, but it's sweet, yummy and cheap -- what more could anyone ask for? 😀
