My husband and I are in our mid 20's and are entertaining the idea of moving to the Virgin Islands. We have both been using our degrees in the "corporate" world and are basically ready for something new. We have been in Florida for the past 3 years and have a decent backround in food and bev. What island would you reccommend we look into? We love the outdoors and my husband is an avid fisherman. I am ready for a quite place where I can make enough money to pay my bills and enjoy the ourdoors. Is it difficult to obtain a job as a server? Are there many charter fishing boats that hire seasonal mates? Do you need personal transportation or is public reliable? Any info would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing what anyone has to say! Thanks!! 🙂

Hello Jamess,

Yes you can find work in food and bev. and as servers pretty readily during season and with more difficulty off season. The island you choose depends entirely on you and what you are looking for as there are restaurants and resorts (in varying number) on each island with the exception of Water Island so you will find work but each islands atmosphere and personality is different. What type of outdoors activities would you want to do besides fishing? Quite a few charter boats on St. Thomas and in lesser amounts St. John and St. Croix - yes some hire seasonal mates. Personal transportation is a great idea and allows you more flexibility in terms of where you find work and an apartment. You can get by on public transportation, $1 buses and taxis if your work and apartment are relatively close. On St. Croix not having transportation is more difficult then St. Thomas and St. John. St. John is more hitch hike friendly then the other islands.

Thank you for the info. What other outdoor activities do we like? Well, I love to hike and explore areas of nature. I am an avid runner and my husband likes a friendly game of soccer. We are not into the night life scene. Which island would you say is the most quiet? Is it true that the average annual income is less than the cost of living? Is is possilbe to live in a one bedroom place, in a safe neighborhood, while working only as a server? I appreciate your insight!!

Hello Jamess,

Water Island is the most quiet and then St. John. Hiking is more popular on St. John (which is a short ferry ride from St. Thomas) and on St. Croix. There is a running association here that you might look into and contact; For The Virgin Islands Pace Runners Information call: 340-777-0258 For St.Thomas Association Race Information call: 340-6373 or 340-777-6093. Soccer - not sure - there used to be a few teams that played down at the UVI St. Thomas campus field. There are a few private schools that offer soccer so your husband could look into being a coach maybe or a ref. or just getting in touch with the present coach to get information. Yes on average incomes are less then cost of living; some people ask well then how do people make it - and the answer is some folks do well $$, others have a few jobs, some have freelance type work that goes unreported and some have goverment assistance. Your question about renting a one bedroom and working as a server - depends on the restaurant whether you will make good tips - if you find a good/busy restaurant/bar then yes if not then you may end up working two jobs if you are paying the bills alone.
