A New Journey to life
Good morning USVI family so happy to be on this site and hoping that it can help me to find answers to lots of question.Am here on the island of Tortola visiting and would like to make St Thomas my new home.Am a US citizen from New York and Maryland and hoping to find a nice apartment by the water or it can be a view as well, also possible to start a business. Is there're anyone who can give me some direction on where, who, what to do first please share your insights and I'll be glad to listen ,thank you in advance .You can shoot me an email tonysoul33@yahoo.com, have a bless day everyone 🙂
Your questions a way too general but don't get discouraged.
Most people here will tell you to start out your research by using the drop down menus at the top of this page and reading everything you find there. Then search through the archives of this forum and read the many threads on starting a new business and apartment living in the USVI's. Those are two very popular topics discussed on this form and you'll find scores of recent threads with literally hundreds of replies offering very helpful information. FYI - there is so much information already posted on this website that it will take you more than a month to read it all.
You should also look at threads dealing with "Pre-Move Visits (often referred to as PMV's. You should plan on making a a relatively long PMV BEFORE you make a decision on moving to any island in the Caribbean.
Also, start building up your nest egg. Conventional wisdom says to have at least 6 months living expenses saved up before you make your move. The more money you have saved up the easier your transition will be.
After you do basic research you can come back and post specific questions and the regular contributors here will be glad to give you specific answers.
No matter how nice the people on this, or any public forum may be -- it may not be the best idea to post your personal email address.
The PM -private message - option here works just fine and is not publicly posted.
Just be aware that unless your job provides it or you qualify for Medicare
(Or Medicaid), you're not going to be able to get healthcare insurance.
Good day and thanks for your response but somehow what I've mention is not even taken seriously only don't do this or don't do that or my question is to generalize .Give me a break if you cannot give a person a positive answer or outlook on something don't school me ,just say you don't know and keep it moving. Not any encouragement except one and thats why this world is so messed up ,the people that makes it hard for other people ...............................Have a bless day 🙁
Step one - Fly to STT. Google fights is pretty good
Step two - find an apartment by the water. Craigslist has apartment ads
Step three - start business.
Step four - profit!
Easy peasy
Good luck
I'm going to suggest you look into employment with the VIGOV. I think you will find it to suit you.
If you're visiting on Tortola, you can hop on the ferry to STT and check it out.
If you need encouragement and a well founded plan step by step I can offer this:
!st take a ferry to STT - rent a car - get the daily Newspaper and the Island Trader for Apt. searching -network - look for permanent transportation solution after you have secured a living situation - get your utilities in order - get a local 340 phone # - decide on your business niche and get the license and permits - go to work!
No negativity intended - if you have the energy to establish yourself here on STT it can certainly be done -- not without some frustrating moments but a positive attitude a barrel of patience and some financial wherewithal can lead to a new journey in life.
Seriously I wish you only good luck.
many respondents on this forum have seen hundreds of folks plan their move to the islands with rose colored viewpoints and dreams of palm trees and pina coladas so the cautionary advice is often offered not as a discouragement factor but a dose of reality that may temper unrealistic expectations and save some people from a decision that was ill considered to begin with.
Tonysoul,
No offense intended in my response to you, however, your original post said that you wished to make STT your home, that you wanted an apartment by the water or with a view, and also, possibly start a business....then asked for direction in "where, who, what to do first". Specifically, WHAT type of direction are you looking for?? Where to find the type of apartment that you desire? So, I would ask, 'Where on island do you want to live? How much do you have to spend a month on rent/utilities?' With that, I (and others on this forum) may be able to direct you. I would also ask, 'What type of business are you planning on starting? Have you looked into all of the logistics of opening your business (or ANY business, for that matter) on STT?' With that information, I (and others on this forum) could, perhaps, point you in the right direction. Afriend's post is exactly what you really should start with - the fact is, you MUST do some research (and, preferably, a Pre Move Visit) before you pick up and move. The FABULOUS thing about this forum is that you can search all of the topics you may have questions about and find a wealth of information. Then, if you have more specific questions, after all of your research, you can then ask away, and many of us will be able to assist you...and will be most HAPPY to do so! I found this forum to be vital in my move to STT 11 years ago, however, I had visited several times prior to my move AND did extensive research - both on my own and on this forum (as soon as I came back from STJ on my first vacation to the VI, I joined this forum). Occasionally, I go back and look at my original posts (asking questions) on this forum, and I just laugh! All "newbies" ask the same thing...we all wanted 'direction' before we moved...and, that's ok, that is perfectly normal, in my opinion. There are many who are quite crabby about their responses to newbies, however, there are many newbies who seem to take things WAY too personally and who are not willing to do their own research. Please, do yourself a favor and research (from this forum, and anything else you can find online)...visit STT to get a feel for the island and where you might want to be...ask specific questions so that we can actually HELP you with the information that you seek. Best of luck in your pursuit of 'island life'. Pilatesgal
