A Move to St John.
Hello All,
This site has been wonderful. I'm contemplating a move to St John in a month or two, depending if I get the job I'm being considered for. Rent is $1600. for a one room house which is available to me fully furnished. I know is pretty standard down there. I'm just curios to know how big of a pain it is to live on St Thomas and commute over five days a week. Also is it possible to find cheaper rent on St John? Lastly, the water situation, how often or do people run out of water? Any other advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Chris
What are income taxes like in the VI? Percentage?
Hello Christopher,
Welcome to the board.
The Income taxes here are the same as in the states - Federal Income Tax.
Yes, St. John is a pricy place to live. I am certain you can find a place for less then $1600, just takes time to look and find something. Hopefully some of the folks that live on St. John can chime in and provide you with an idea of what their rental cost experiences have been.
How much of a pain commuting. Well there are quite a few people that do it so it isn't that horriable. I had a friend that worked on St. John and lived out in the Northside of St. Thomas... the drive to the ferry dock was long and add to it the ferry and then the drive on STJ - didn't work out but for a few months. If you are going to do that its best to be in the proximity of the ferry dock so the drive there is short.

Just a thought about commuting from St. Thomas to St. John - for most people one of the main draws of relocating to the islands is the promise of a more laid back lifestyle. If that applies to you then why would you want to put up with the daily grind of a long commute? Ask yourself if you'd rather be spending that extra time enjoying the finer points of island life.
