a few questions about a possible move
so we've contemplated the move from coastal georgia down to st. thomas. we've both found enjoyable, decent jobs on the north side and we're ready to go, but i have a few questions i hope one of you down there can help me with. i know a lot of them are repetitive to otheres, but some i didn't see answers to.
Are dogs allowed on the inter-island ferries? if we go over to st. john's for the day or st. croix are we able to bring our lab along?
Another dog question, are the beaches dog friendly? are there any places to let them off leash and run around?
My potential employer, Coral World, are they a well known and respected establishement? There seems to be a high turnover rate, is it the company, or people not ready for island life?
Those are my biggest questions, mostly pet related. Thanks for your help. I want to make sure i have it all "together" before i get down there without running myself into crazy debt. Also, keep your eyes and ears open for a pet friendly house/apartment on north or east end! thanks!
I've never seen any dogs on the ferries, but I imagine they must let them on...maybe in dog crates? Then again, I always take my dog over in my Jeep on the car ferry, so I'm not on the people ferry very often.
Some beaches are OK for you and your pet, not all. Secluded/non-touristy beaches are good with dogs. Like Hull Bay Beach, Lindqvist, Neltjberg, Vessup, etc. Busy beaches, or ones with a hotel on them, are a no-no. Like Magens, Coki, Sapphire, Morningstar, Limetree, Cowpet, Secret Harbor, etc.
Coral World's turn-over is, most likely, due to people moving off-island. It's an OK place to work, according to friends that work there.
Thanks, I needed to know the answer to some of those questions too!
Are the secluded beaches safe to go to alone with the dogs? My dogs aren't that scary-looking, they look like Arctic foxes, so I don't see them being much protection. Also, are there wild dogs on the beaches? Have there been any gun-related incidents there? I don't mean to sound neurotic, but I got attacked (by a man, not dogs!) returning to my car from the beach in Antigua - it was a tourist beach, and I had my dog with me, so I thought I was safe!
Is the car ferry to St John's expensive, and how long does it take?
Sue
Hello Sue,
Check out the beach guide on our other site at http://www.vinow.com/stthomas/beaches_stt/, it describes the beaches and also the atmosphere (crowds etc.). Some of the beaches are not secluded but are off the beaten path for visitors; like Hull Bay which Marty mentioned. Lindquist is a beautiful beach but has had a few criminal incidents happen there, so keep an eye out for people hanging out in the tree line that look like they might be up to no good, or go in a group. On weekends Lindquist is popular with residents so there are usually people there then. Its on weekdays that it is typically sparsely populated to unpopulated.
A lot of people here are afraid of other people's dogs; almost any type of dog. Not many stray dogs on beaches. There are stray dogs around the island though, so this is something to look out for - particularly in terms of your dog getting into fights with them. This applies to cats too.
You can find info. on the car barge and other ferries at http://www.vinow.com/general_usvi/interisland_ferry/.
