a few questions
*Hi there. My husband and I are thinking about relocating and we're exploring our options. We are both in love with the USVIs and have a few questions.
1. about how much does it cost to ship a vehicle over to st.croix?
2. do most people get by with their cisters or do they often pay for water (140 a month?)?
3. I am an avid gardener and one of the appealing things about a warm climate are the gardening possibilites. I have heard that the USVIs do not have much arable land. Is this true? (I'm most interested in st.croix) If so, is there anything that can be done to imrove the situation on a given piece of property? (ie. composting) Is it possible to grow a lot of your own food?
Thank you so much for your help!
Casey
Casey,
To ship a vehicle - depends on the weight and county of origin - in terms of cost to ship and taxes.... also on shipping company. You might look under the moving guide (top of this page in navigation) select Shipping - there is a subtopic once in shipping for car. Might find help there.
Water - depending on set up. Some condos have meters - you pay what you use. Other apartments have cisterns to you use it and then you buy a trunk. The prices for a trunk of water of listed in the moving guide along with other cost of living under Island Living - so look under Island Living in the moving guide to find that information.
Gardening - well St. Croix is the most agricultural of the USVI islands. All the islands once were used to grow sugar, cotton, tobacco - succesfully to some extent. Today not as many people farm their lands but a few do. If you are residing in a house built a while ago the soil is probally settled and compact. If its a recent build the soil might be loose from when they bulldozed the area. In any case you might have to dig up the soil to lossen it up and add some top soil or fertilizer/compost depending on where you choose to live. You can also consider building some boxes and put good soil in them and plant that way. You will be able to garden yes - just will need to take into consideration what grows well here and the soil and rain and sun.
In personal experiences: On St. Thomas; have had luck with lettuce in wooden boxes, tomatoes, peppers (not bell peppers little island peppers - LOL dont know the right name) as well as herbs of different kinds - thyme, rosemary..., knew some folks that grew potatoes and pumpkin and pineapple.
