A few days in, things are going great!
i got in on wed. night...headed straight to the deck bar with my new employers 🙂
started work on thurs 🙂
found an apartment right away, moved in today, actually 🙂
today alone, i was able to set up my mailbox, bank account, and WAPA all by 1 in the afternoon! 🙂
I was totally suprised, given all the horror stories i've heard. but it really helped having people to tell me where to go and exactly what to do, i can see how much of a pain in the a$$ it could be.
it now sounds like i've got a vehicle lined up to buy, and then i'm pretty much settled. in less than a week, while working a couple days, too!
other than just getting things done, though. i have had a bunch of time to get to know a lot of really great people, and already i can't walk down the boardwalk without running into at least 2 people i know.
I LOVE IT HERE!
thanks again everyone!
Jon
oh, and i'm already getting used to driving on the left 🙂
Congratulations!
I hope ya didn't jinx yourself, Jon! Haha! Welcome and ENJOY!
So how did you get a job so quick? Any advice for a future mover? I'm headed that was on New Year's Day (actually coming in New Years Eve...gotta party with my new neighbors whoever they may be). I actually got temp housing at Villa Fairview which I'm not even sure where is...hoping new Red Hook, but not sure. Have $$ to get cheap car which I plan on doing as soon as I get there. I have management background (in insurance but still management) but would really like to bartend, but with no experience, not sure how easy that would be. I'm just shocked you had a job lined up before you got there and curious as to any advice you may have for me to do the same. Thanks and it's good to actually read a good story b/c I've read all the horror stories too and it'll make ya a little nervous.
Good to hear the left side of the road driving is easy to get used to!!

Kieran's in STX. You must be heading to STT. Villa Fairview is downtown, not near Red Hook. Have you ever been here before?
What kind of job? One that pays enough to live on? In your career?
yup, STX. I'm a dive instructor/divemaster, so it wasn't super difficult for me to find something. i decided to move in april, and started talking to all the dive shops on the island at that time. I was lucky to have had the ability to talk to potential employers prior to getting down here. it seems like unless you forward your travel itinerary to whoever you're talking to about a job, you're most likely gonna here "give us a call when you get here". that goes for apartments, as well. i had my friends scan and email me the Avis starting about a month ago, and i started calling on apartments. nobody would even talk to me when i told them "i'm relocating from wisconsin..." so i found it works a lot better if you just tell them you want to come look at it on a certain day.
and BRING SOME MONEY! even if you have a job lined up already, and are moving into a furnished apartment, it's still expensive to get settled.
i went to Kmart yesterday and spent $150.00 on a water bottle and some bug spray. literally! things are considerably more expensive here than in the states. WAPA charges $125.00 just to get your power on. all that kinda stuff adds up
I answered you.8-)
that's true, you did, Juanita. thank you for that. you were one of very few
😉
Thanks for the advice and heads up kieren.... Im moving down to St John the beggining of November and I'm still job/apartment searching. Just graduated from college and ready to move to the islands. Any more advice for moving down there and what to look for? cheers!
what is the avis and how can a person get it?
The Avis is a newspaper based on St. Croix but available on all the Virgins. It's not online.
Good luck!
Thanks for livin the dream K. Keep the posts comin, it's startin to get cold here. (but the colors are beautiful!)
