3 month stay in STT from NYC - A coupla' questions...
Hi,
I am 24, and work in TV production here in Manhattan. I am moving to STT with a friend of the same age as a little break from the hustle of NYC living. We will be working when there, but want to be able to have a good time with a few nights/days off per week, without staying in a rat hole and are trying to find some insider information on which neighborhoods/areas of the island are suitable for this type of living... Probably the same type many are looking for, so excuse me if I sound all too common with my goals here. But mainly somewhere that is relatively Metroplolitan, but close to clean beaches. Price range would probably be a ceiling of $1200 per month for a two bedromm apartment or preferably bungalow or some such residence. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, by any chance, would anyone happen to have a grasp on the TV production situation in STT... long shot, but scouring the internet, and hard to find anything, though I'm sure it is a small industry.
Again, thanks so much!
Adam
Just a brief note: I am not sure what metropolitan means to you. If you are looking for a sophisticated and urbane NY city type dwelling, you are not going to find it on St Thomas. A 2 bedroom condo in Mahogany Run is advertising at $2400/month. That is one of the larger gated properties, if that is the kind of thing you are looking for. Also, if you are looking for only housing for 3 months, you will be limited.
Just some unasked for advice: the "rat hole" remark didn't sit well with me, maybe others.
If you read the archives here, you will find out that the VI doesn't have nice, neat divisions between the metropolitan and non-metropolitan residents.
What you see is what you get.
East Ender, thanks for the response. I meant no insult to anyone by the term "rathole". I was merely asking how far my $1200 a month limit would get me, considering that rent on the island is high, and you get what you pay for. I don't want to live in an upscale condo, I would rather stay in semi-modest accomodations. It is my intention to live among the islanders, and don't want division between metropolitan and non-metropolitan residents. My use of the term metropolitan was in reference to easy transport and shopping.
Thanks for the recommendation, but definitely looking for something nice but within my $1200 price cap. Any other recommendations would be so greatly appreciated. Can't wait to get there. so excited!

Adam: When you say easy transport, are you expecting to use public transportation? If so, you will find it rather lacking compared to stateside standards. For example, the buses and safaris don't continue into the night. They also follow a limited loop.
Grocery stores are in Crown Bay area, Long Bay, Tutu and Red Hook. There are smaller convenience type stores sprinkled around.
Your best bet is going to be bringing enough money to keep you afloat, staying in a guest house while you look for something. Many places will require a lease for 6 months or more. If you are coming in the summer, you may have more success.
Adam: Just to add my two cents, you should consider renting a vehicle while here. As East Ender has noted, public transportation is limited. Taxi rides get very old very fast and they're also expensive.
There are no "bungalows" here. You might think of staying at Villa Fairview for a week or so until you get your bearings. Ronnie posts regularly on this board and if you research the forum you'll find a bunch of info to ingest and digest.
As far as TV production situations here, it's indeed a small market but - and if you've read the general postings here you'll understand - you have to be here in person to scout out any openings. Your three month stay is going to limit you quite a bit insofar as any job is concerned but if you're resourceful it can be done.
I do understand from where you're coming! And, incidentally, what IS your proposed arrival date? Cheers.
