Hello friends!

I'm a 21 year old female moving to the islands in August alone! I have visited and stayed lengthy amounts, driving around the island. Where is a safe place to live? One where I can feel comfortable if I happen to live alone! Good place to find employement? I'm open to any of the islands! I really love St. John. Also, any advice would be great! Thanks 🙂

you might have better luck on STT. seems like there would be more to do for you there and more job opportunities.

maybe someone who lives there can give you more info

Welcome to the board!
What sort of employment do you seek?
Where did you stay when you visited that made you feel safe?

I stayed in Charlotte Amalie. I stayed at bluebeards castle and enjoyed the location. I really liked the Redhook area but I read up that sometimes there is violence in that area. I just want to live somewhere that I can comfortably enjoy my surroundings. I'm just curious as to where to stay away from when looking! I'll be finishing up my biology degree at the college there so I was hoping for a bartending/serving job at night!

Red Hook area has rentals, groceries, beaches, job opportunities, many bars and nightlife but UVI is on the other side of the island and can be a long commute depending on time of day/night, season.

Northside might be a better location to live depending on where you end up working as safer, generally, and closer to UVI BUT there is no public transportation.

How do you plan on getting around? Public transportation is extremely limiting and the $2 safaris don't run after dark, plus you have to be on a main road to catch them or a bus.

Hope you planned for getting a car in your budget.

Quite honestly, there is more "violence" in the area near Bluebeard's Castle than in the area near Red Hook. Neighborhoods are not quite like neighborhoods in Big America. For example, people tout the north side as safe, yet, they complain about hearing gun fire. The east end is very quiet in that respect. There are safe areas all over the island. It is a good idea to come, find a short term place, then find a neighborhood that meets your needs. I do wish you would consider a life style other than food and beverage. We need skilled workers in many areas, especially education, health care, etc.

You sure don't want to consider STJ if you are finishing up at UVI.
And even Red Hook or the East End will add a good hour or more each day to your commute.
Consider Crown Mt. area or even Santa Maria, estate Pearl or Bonne Resolution which are all west of UVI and considered fairly residential and quiet.
You may be able to find some housing available in Frenchtown which would be a good venue for your job search and convenient to daylight public transportation to UVI.
Good Luck and keep asking questions.

I think upper Dorothea would be good, safe and close to UVI... or even Carat Bay Area... finding a small rental there would be a challenge. Also far-ish from red hook and young single scene. We never locked our doors there and felt totally safe. Everyone watches out for each other on north side.

I know this may be a PM comment but I feel it needs to be said in public. PLEASE watch yourself on any of these islands of your alone and always have condoms handy!

You're making a big assumption there. Maybe she swings the other way!
