So I have been given a job offer in STT. Im 33, engaged with a dog. We would all be moving.

We have read about no running water, Bring on "island time," and crime.

What I'm interested to know is how real it is...we are not stupid and don't partake in any crazy nightlife or drugs....how bad is the crime for a nor.al resident? Also, can I expect to not have running water? Or is it common to find a place with it?

Island time will just be part of the gig...get setup and enjoy...

Please, I want to know specifically where you read there is no running water on St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. That bit of misinformation needs to be corrected.

Thank you.

Perhaps they simply need to read up on cisterns?

once in a while WAPA-power and water company-have outages. could that be what was said? about no running water?

when are you coming here to find a place to live. did you know animals in cargo can only fly at certain times of the year? all shots need to be updated within 10 days of the move.

murder is mostly gang-but not always

other crime happens to anyone anywhere

There is no continual surface running water perhaps? i.e rivers or streams?

Yes, you can expect running water. Most residential homes and apts. have cisterns and condos RO systerms. If power goes out, you can't run the water or you'll empty the water lines and water pump will have to be primed or bled before it'll pump water again. It's a minor inconvenience and you learn to deal with it. We have more outages than you've experienced elsewhere so good to have extra water, battery operated lights on hand and use propane stove for cooking that doesn't require electricity.

You'll need to learn not to be wasteful with water or you'll end up having to purchase to refill the cistern. 5000 gals. runs around $380.

That's got to be one of the weirdest questions I've heard yet.

There is crime. Just like anywhere else.
Most killings are retaliatory between gangs.
Just exercise common sense.

Just goes to show that De Jongh's lawyers have a point. It's all in the commas. Click if you don't know what I'm talking about 😀

Back to your question... We have running water, and it would be odd to find a place that didn't have it. But as mentioned, most places rely on water catchment for the water supply. If you ever run out, you can have water delivered. So we all tend to be pretty conservative with our water use.

As far as crime goes... yes, there is crime. Most of it is not random, but some of it is. As a whole, we have not recovered from the recession and unemployment rates here are high as well as poverty rates. All of those things certainly don't help as far as crime is concerned. Avoiding illegal activity, staying out till the wee hours of the morning, and getting really intoxicated will help you stay safe. Using common sense and good judgement go a long way.

Not sure where you are from, or what kind of dog you have, but sometimes dogs who are used to cool climates, and have a lot of fur, don't really like it here. Fleas, ticks, heart worm, are all problems here. Diligent prevention is a must. And as mentioned, if it's a large dog who can only fly in cargo, they can only be transported in the winter months when it's cooler. The general rule is that if it is forecasted to be 85 or more at any stop along the way, they will not allow the dog to fly in cargo.

Hi Amorell - We're new too. We flew to the island on American Airlines with my dog...a Yorkie about 11 pounds. They've got a lot of restrictions as to the kinds of dogs they will allow in the cabin as a carryon and they charge $125. Be sure to check the airline's website for specifics. Be sure to have a health certificate issued within 10 days of your flight and evidence of rabies vaccine in the last 6 months. This info does not apply to dogs in the cargo hold. That has its own set of rules.

Sounds like your source of info didn't know the difference between running water vs city water (a public water system). Either that or this is just part of the newbie hazing 🙂 Someone may be having a really big laugh at your expense.

Welcome!

My wife and I are in a similar position. She has accepted a job offer on STX in Jan. 2016. We are from New Orleans and will be moving first of the year, We have done about as much research as humanly possible without ever having been to STX before. Our main concern is our pets, one a wienie dog (13lbs) and the other a multi-poo (12lbs). They are both in their senior years of 12-14yrs and we are having problems finding a place to rent with them. Due to the timing of the move, we cannot wait until they go to "Doggie Heaven" nor can we bring them right away. Any suggestions??

The only thing I can suggest is that one of you comes in advance of the other to find a place to live while staying somewhere temporary (much easier and way more sensible when you're physically here), with the other following with the dogs. I know many people over the years who've done it that way and they've usually found housing in max two weeks, most much faster. Good luck!

If you haven't already, you might try Facebook:

St Croix VI Buy and Sell Your Stuff

Pirate's Chest. Buy,Trade or Sell. St.Croix..VI

People often list rentals on there that accept pets. But you really don't want to rent until you've physically visisted a place. Catch-22, I know, for you. Good luck.

We can help you out if nothing else comes up, I already foster most of the dogs from the animal shelter ( or the ones I find when I go to drop off trash, or what ever my wife comes home with... lol), I'm sure yours wouldn't cause much of an issue.

Get a hold of us if you can't find any resolution.

I know lots of transplants that do just like OT suggested. One comes first, finds a place to live, then the rest of the crew and belongings follow. Good luck!

Ironically we DO have carrier pigeons! Well they're homing pigeons. A guy in hull bay breeds and races them.... They fly from FLORIDA! Amazing birds!
