2 week temp housing

Hello everyone, I have a few problems that are posing a threat to my move to St. Thomas. First... Shevon and I had originally secured a house on the east end which happened to have fallen through due to the fact that the landlord did not feel comfortable renting to individuals working in the service industry. After putting all of our eggs in that basket it came as a shock when we found out we have no place to stay upon arrival on October 18th. Then, we have recently been in contact with a great guy named rich who arrived on the island about a week ago. Rich has been scouting out places for us to share. He informed me that St. John is the place to be and that we would be much happier working and living on that island. However, the place he has secured is a bit out of our price range and it seems as if it will be impossible for Shevon and I to save money if we are spending 1225 a month on rent alone. Now, on the other hand we have found a 1 bedroom fully furnished in Redhook for 750 a month which is located in the my realitors own home, on the lower level. She is willing to rent us this place but not untill Nov 1rst. That gives us a two week period of not having a place to stay and I don't want to spend another 1000 dollars on a hotel for two weeks! Any advice????????? SHould we take the place on St. John?????

Phil, sorry to hear about this. And while I can't help you, I am glad you brought it to our attention.

It makes me wonder about getting an apartment when you have no job for the time being. Jim is self employed and it's difficult for people to understand that his income is steady. It usually takes a lot of proof - bank statements, income tax forms, etc. So I've always applied for rentals, etc. however, I won't have a job when we get there. Does anyone know whether this is going to cause us a problem with renting?

Thanks.

I think experiences vary. We had no problem renting, just had a hard time finding a place big enough. As long as we had the deposit, first and last months rent, we never had to prove our income or even say what we did. I don't work, but my husband never had to prove income. I think it is a matter of being there in person as opposed to over the phone, etc. If you are going to rent, maybe it is best to get temporary housing instead of going with something sight unseen.

Just my two cents.

Stick with the St Thomas place. Yes St John is way nicer but why live out of your means and not have funds to enjoy the other activities the islands have to offer. Personally I would rather spend the money in STT and not worry as much about money. Especially if you don't have income as of yet,
