I visited STJ, think that's how yall type it, last summer and have since "blabbed about my far out pipe dream" to almost anyone who will listen. I am excited that I finally found the moving center and this board. Rather than sift through all the other posts, I was just gonna see how it worked for me.

1- What kind of time frame should I set for myself for having everything setup before I even leave Texas?

2- Should I pursue a job that is a potential career, or just find work first?
I will graduate in Dec. with my BA in marketing and will be working as a pharmaceutical sales rep until I move. I think their is potential for work seeing as how MKTG and tourism go hand-in-hand.

3- What resources are available for finding a place to live, other than the feature on the VI moving center page.

4- I have a family member who was living on STT, well, the last I heard. Is there a way to get a phone book or something to try to locate a person.

I know anyone who made it through this is saying DONT WRITE SO MUCH IN A POST, and I assure you, we will consider it a first time thing.

Thanks for the info.....

Thinkin bout Trunk Bay.........

Other people only call it a pipe dream because they do not have the creativity, vision or bravery to make a change in their own lives. I said for years that I was moving to the tropics once I had things in place to do so. Nobody took me seriously. When I put my house on the market, people asked where I was moving to, assuming I'd say the next town over or a different sub-division. When I said my sons and I were moving to St. Croix, they were stunned. Well... at first, they asked where St. Croix was... then asked where the Virgin Islands were... then had to figure out where the Caribbean was... and THEN they were stunned. Talk about a lack of vision!

If it feels right and makes sense to you to make the move, then go for it. If everyone "got it," there would be millions of new residents invading the islands. With that in mind, I'd say it's just as well that most people don't understand what attracts some of us to life in Paradise. I believe that we value different things in life and have a different way of measuring quality of life.

On your specific questions...
The time frame to plan for your move varies for everyone. Some need to finish school or wait for a child to reach a certain age or to put in enough years at their current job to qualify for full retirement pay. Many need to put away enough money to pay for their move and give them some cushion when they arrive. Your financial situation usually determines when you can make the move.

You should plan to come for a pre-move visit (PMV) to find yourself a place to stay and explore job options in advance of your final move. When you were here before, you probably did not spend time on those activities. It is difficult to find housing or jobs without actually being on-island. Apartments for rent are listed in the local paper or found through word of mouth. Many jobs are found through word of mouth, also. Networking is the best way to get most things done here. This message board can help you with some of that. You should take some time to read through pages of old postings, as you will find many topics that are of interest to you and answer most of your questions.

If you have the name of your relative who might be on one of the islands, you can send it in a private message and I'll see if they are in the local phone book.

Hello,

Welcome to the board! My first advice is to research things. Read through what other folks ask on the board and the answers, read through the information on this site (click on Home at the top, left to access the information), order the Settlers Handbook or the relocation packet and read through all that information. You can get the books at: http://www.vitraders.com. Ask questions that you think of while reading and researching.

Definitely look up your family member, the phone book is online at http://www.viphonebook.com - click on white pages and then do the search by name.

Your time frame depends on how much money you have saved or how much time you need to save that money, how long it will take you to wrap things up (do you have things you need to sell, a car, job contracts...) or is nothing really keeping you back?

I think since you have a degree, you should look into that line of work; keep different options open. You could contact some of the larger resorts and inquire about jobs in marketing. You could also try the newspapers and various visitors’ magazines. The TV stations.

If you are thinking you might need a seasonal type job to keep you going when you first get on island while you seek the marketing job then keep in mind that season starts around mid-November and last through May. Also keep in mind that because of the influx of seasonal workers during season, apartments are less available. Just some factors to keep in mind when planning.

Apartments; the newspapers, bulletin boards in mail centers, word of mouth, realtors.
