Turtle grass allergy?
I'm looking to see if this has happened to anyone else and what they know about it.
A few times now coming in from snorkeling, I have brushed my fore arms against the turtle grass and almost instanly feel pain;
later on I get bumps and the same burning feeling. This all goes away in about three hours. I was wondering if it is the grass, something on the grass, or just an allergy that I may have. Any help here would be appreciated.
The thread is a bit old but I thought I would give you my .02..... I highly doubt its the grass, its more than likely Hydroids, they love those calm types of waters. Some are the non swimming versions of jellyfish therefore same painful rules of stinging nematosysts. They look like little white or clear tuffs on small stalks. The best thing is to NOT touch the area, wave the water with your hand as hard as you can towards the area. This helps get the loose "stinger" off. Using a slurry of VERY hot (as hot as you can take) vinegar and meat tenderizer powder. Soak a hand towl in the mixture and slap it on the area. Repeat as the towel cools. All those things will help break down and stop the nematosysts from continuing to fire. My poor boyfriend got hit by them pretty bad on his ribcage from a mooring rope in chenay bay. It really sucked for him, luckily I knew what they were and what to do and he was good by the next morning. 😀
