summer camps
My family and I will be moving down to St. Croix at the end of June and I was wondering if there are any summer camps for children and also does anyone have an idea for my son to make some friends before school starts?
So the adjustment will be a little easier, he is very sad about having to move.
Also is there anything I should know about moving our pets with us down there?
Thank you,
Migiz
there is a Boy Scout camp on the south shore. That might be a good way to meet others.
migiz,
I can't give you any specific information about meeting children on St. Croix. However, in my experience in moving to STT it is a little difficult, but not impossible. When we moved to STT I took my son to the local parks ALOT! It is a great way to meet other parents and children. We also go to the beaches that the locals frequent. Here in STT the best days for locals are of course Saturday and Sunday when folks are off work. I don't know how old your son is, but it will be important to tell him that it will take a little time, but he will have plenty of friends in no time.
your son's age will impact which ways he can most easily meet other kids and make friends over the summer. There are different venues and events I'd suggest for different aged children. Since you asked about summer camps, I suspect your son is grade school aged. Some of the summer ways to connect with other kids include time at the beach. Go to the hermit crab races at the several locations where they are held as lots of kids are there each week. If you attend church you can meet families with children that way and most churches have vacation bible school programs. I am not sure if the Dolphins Swim Team stays active during the summer, but if it does that's a great way to get him involved and meet new friends. Check with Country Day School about that one. Country Day and Good Hope also have some summer enrichment programs available and the people in the offices might have lists of events or outings or gatherings at the schools where your son could get a jump start on becoming familiar with the school as well as meeting other kids.
For pets, just be aware that it's difficult to move large dogs to the islands during the hotter months of the year. Sometimes a private charter is the only way to do it or you can leave a dog with someone to bring later when the weather cools. Also there is a serious tick issue for pets and heartworms are also common. Get your pet medicated a couple months before you arrive so that it is in full effect and then don't lapse on the dosage. Even then, pets still get ticks and you will likely find it necessary to pick some off him now and then. Some animals shed more here in the warm weather. A good defurring tool, such as a "Furminator" can help both cats and dogs.
Hello there!
Come check out Country Day School on STX. I am the Pre-K and Kindergarten art teacher there but I will also be coordinating the arts and crafts for all age groups at our summer camp. There will be a different theme every week and it's going to be a lot of fun! It would be a great way for your son to get adjusted and meet some friends.
Also, like Alexandra mentioned...many of my students and other children of all ages enjoy going to the crab races on Friday at The Deep End/Tamarind Reef Beach.
To be honest, on STX there always seems to be something going on. I'm sure just going to the beach your little one will find a playmate:)
Contact me if you have any further Q's about summer camp at Country Day.

Thanks everyone for some great tips I think the crab races and some of the camps sounds like a great place to start.
