New to Starving Artist...advice?

Best of luck Dan. I will make a point to come out for your exhibit. I went last year but was dismayed that the artists here were greedier than the starving artist shows back home. Prices were way high.

I have been going to the Starving Artists shows for the past three years. They are always fun to walk around and view all the different types of art being shown. As well as crafty items. The August show tends to be the least attended. Two reasons, the hot weather and fewer tourists on island. Don't be discouraged if you don't sell a lot this first show. I suggest you sign up for the November show. That one always attracts a large crowd. People are shopping for themselves as well as Holiday gifts. Although they sell food and drink I would suggest you bring a cooler of ice water (or whatever your choice is) to keep handy. You should be allowed to start setting up by 8-9am. And it seems most of the artists stay till the very end unless they have sold out. Good luck!

Count on it being hot. A good idea to enter in August, even as practice for the big November show. Some vendors come from off island for that one. You could probably speak to Sylvia Brady at Whim for times, etc, but I think the method of display etc is pretty much up to you, within your allotted space. August is lightly attended, but I'm not sure if it's cause there's little for sale, or if few come to sell cause few attend. I recall one of my sons, years ago, when he was probably 12 or 13, commented after that show that "now he knew why the artists were starving....". I'll look for you if I make it there.

Great to hear we've got another talented artist on island. My husband and I particiated in all the craft/art exhibit shows for several years. Sounds like you're ready. I might suggest you bring a cooler with water and perhaps lunch or snacks and maybe a fanny pak to keep your money in. Also might want to consider bringing enough start up money for making change (if need be) for customers. Be prepared to stall ALL DAY. I remember having to arrive early in the morning to get set up and not being able to leave until the end of the day. You might also want to get to know the artists/crafters in the spots around you in case you need to step away from your spot for the always needed bathroom break.

What great and humorous advice! Thank you all so much! I will make sure to bring LOTS of ice and drinks. As I can't sit for very long periods of time, I have folks that will take my place so I can get up and stretch.

I kind of figured this would be a slow show, but slow is good for right now. I need to get my feet wet again after a long period of NOT doing shows.

When is the show in November? If it's after the 23rd I'll make a point of checking it out. We are always on the look out for island art.

Thanks Dan. I didn't know or didn't remember that there was an event calender on VINOW. I see that I'll be able to make the Jump UP and the art show. WHOO-HOO!
