LGBTQ affirming churches?
Hello!
We are planning to visit STX soon and would love to visit a church while in town. LGBTQ inclusivity is an important issue for us.
Are there any LGBTQ affirming churches in STX?
I have been scouring the web/this forum for a bit and was unable to find anything reliable.
Thanks!
Justin
This is a difficult question. STX is a tolerant place to a point - but I don't think anyone would call this island gay-friendly.
The overall culture here is conservative, you cover-up and mind the rules. The churches here are well attended and reflect the conservative mindset. Lutheran, Moravian, Catholic, Reform. I am not a church goer - but I would expect you and your partner to be welcomed as Christian worshippers but not necessarily embraced as openly gay men.
The openly gay owners of the Fred lasted a year or two post the 2017 hurricane. They had issues with some of the West end locals that caused them to leave the island quickly and permanently. The Fred has new owners and still bills itself as adults-only but not LGBTQ+ friendly per se now. Still a beautiful place though.
Ken Mapp, VI governor from 2015 to 2019, was known to be a gay man. He left the island to live more authentically in FL when he lost his re-eiection bid.
The event referenced below took place in the BVI - but the local comments are pretty reflective of attitudes here.

All said, come and enjoy the beaches and food culture.
