Landmarks Society "Come Home to St. Croix" Event (July)
Event: Come Home to St. Croix (July 13-20, 2014) is our annual celebration of culture, history and family. This is our fourth year of hosting an eight-day celebration of culture, history and family. It appeals to Crucians living abroad who wish to reconnect with our culture, Crucians residing at home who want to move closer to our culture, others who have found a home on St. Croix and visitors from far and near. It has grown in popularity, as families and other groups plan reunions on St. Croix.
We believe, that together with other educational programs, Come Home to St. Croix can help children and adults to develop a strong sense of Self, Place and Responsibility. By strengthening family ties, teaching traditional values and customs, we can strengthen our community.
In 2014, exhibits, lectures and workshops will include:
• Exhibit: Hoss, Hossman, & Hoss Racing: Their Role in the Social, Cultural and Economic Development of St. Croix
• Roundtable Discussion: Chatting the the Horsemen Dem; Dr. Olaf "Bronco " Hendricks, Moderator.
• Solving the Puzzle of Kinship: Plaskett Family Work Session
• Getting Started with Your Family History: a hands-on workshop
Major exhibits will be open to the public through July 2015, enhancing the Estate Whim Museum visitor experience.
Short essays on what it means to "Come Home." The idea of Home is a powerful concept, wrapped up in emotion and memories of people, places, family and friends. If you consider St. Croix a home, we want to know why. Whether you were born here, grew up here, chose to move to the island or came as a visitor and simply fell in love - what does it mean to Come Home to St. Croix? Home can be more than one place, especially for those who no longer live on island. When you think of the experiences that make St. Croix your home, what visceral images come to mind? Smells, sounds, places, people, experiences.
If you find yourself inspired, we welcome you to contribute. We value a diversity of writings! This will be the second year of publishing this series in our commemorative Come Home to St. Croix booklet. Send your contributions, 250-400 words, via email, with a note giving permission for publication, to graphics@stcroixlandmarks.org. Essays should be 250 to 300 words; deadline is June 20th. Essays may be submitted digitally via email to graphics@stcroixlandmarks.org
