October is Family History Month – Celebrate it at the Caribbean Genealogy Library’s Open House
Saturday, October 19th, 1pm to 5pm

Curious about your roots? Not sure where to begin with making a family tree? Have you hit a wall with your current research? Do you enjoy Caribbean history and culture? Come to the Caribbean Genealogy Library Open House!

The Caribbean Genealogy Library on St. Thomas is holding an open house on Saturday, October 19th, 2013 from 1pm to 5pm. The public is welcome to come have a tour of the library and learn about the wonderful books and resources available. Volunteers will be available to help visitors work on their own family research using library resources; and this help applies to the entire family.

The Open House will feature two presentations by local historians. The first by Leayle Robinson entitled “Tis Ting to Talk” will discuss local sayings and is sure to be entertaining for all. The second presentation by Nadine Marchena-Kean, “Ties that Bind” is on Jewish family history in the Virgin Islands, in particular the Gomez and Moron families. Presentations will begin at 2pm.

For kids and teens, volunteers will be on hand to help parents share family history with young people and start their own genealogy chart. The children’s family tree activity is most appropriate for 3rd graders and up, and starts at 3:30pm.

Additional activities planned for the open house are a raffle, book sale and local refreshments. This is a great opportunity to talk with others who are interested in Virgin Islands culture, history and genealogy.

Caribbean Genealogy Library’s mission to identify, preserve and provide access to Caribbean genealogy, history and cultural heritage information resources for the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean.

The library houses unique and rare books on Virgin Islands history and culture; funeral booklets, microfilms; and provides access to church records and other documents. Regular workshops and presentations are held to encourage the community to learn about their family and cultural history. It is located in Al Cohen’s Plaza (Raphune Hill), next to Mango Tango Art Gallery.

Make sure you call to see if they are open.

We waited 2 hours one day as niece was visiting from Cayman Islands and wanted to do some research.
Quite a few people came by, including a gentleman from Denmark and another fellow from Seattle, all looking to do some research.
No one responed to any phone calls to their listed number nor was there a sign stating they would not be open at the appointed day
and time.

Very disppointing.
